We agree with Meryl Streep on this at least – the nicest people come from Canada.

The immensely talented American actress suggested as much in her Golden Globes award speech Sunday evening while talking about Ryan Gosling. Yup, he’s one of ours. Huge talent and the ladies love him. Chalk one up for Team Canada!

But Streep should have stopped there, accepted her Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime contributions to the world of entertainment and avoided both hypocrisy and insult towards the millions of average Americans who watch her films, and left the stage.

Instead, she launched into a rant against incoming U.S. President, Donald Trump, vilifying Trump over a campaign incident where he arguably mocked a disabled reporter from The New York Times, though he continues to insist he wasn’t doing that.

“This instinct to humiliate,” Streep said during the award show, “when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence.”

Streep also looked down her refined nose at popular culture – via criticism over Trump’s stance on immigration.

Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” she said. “And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.

It’s clear that Streep and other bicoastal celebs from New York and California still don’t get what happened in the recent U.S. election.

They don’t appreciate that average people across the U.S. don’t share the views or concerns of the wealthy, indulgent, out-of-touch cultural elite.

Average families are worried about finding or losing work, not a politically-correct mindset that undermines values they hold.

And while entertainers are entitled to their opinions, the recent U.S. election made it crystal clear the public doesn’t put much stock in those opinions.

That said, Trump got it wrong in his Twitter reaction. He called Streep “over-rated” as an actress. We beg to differ, but she should stick to acting. Her foray into political statements didn’t do it for us.

Don’t quit your day job, Ms. Streep.
