Residents of Dexing, a city of around 300,000 people, linked the event to air and water pollution.

A social media user, who claims to have lived in Dexing for decades, wrote on Weiboon January 7: ’Copper mines and various chemical factories discharge their waste at will. However the government did not pay attention.
